The New Short Bob: One Hair Cut Four Ways

The New Short Bob: One Hair Cut Four Ways

I spent ten amazing years peeking through a long-fringed ear-length ‘bob’. Then bob and I parted ways, so to speak, and I went to great lengths to look more youthful with longer, flowing curls. But the new short bob has me seriously considering the chop…

This style is much more sophisticated, easy to maintain and super versatile. “Perfect for work or play, this cut is incredibly versatile and is suitable for either straight or curly textured hair,” explains hair design guru, Virginie Gayssot, who is the Head of Education for Franck Provost Paris Australia.

Face Shapes: Will It Suit You?

Virginie says the cut works best on diamond, oval or square shaped faces. “However, it can also be quite flattering for a round face when worn ultra-chic behind the ears.”

Versatility Factor? A Cut Above The Rest

Delete visions of blunt cuts. This ‘do breaks the rules to rock multiple looks. “The volume is round and subtly unstructured, with a delicate tapering effect designed to create movement and open up a wide variety of styling options,” explains Virginie. “So you can deepen the side part and wear it forward to bring attention to the eyes, keep it sleek and smoothly slicked back, or even softly waved with added volume at the crown.”

Maintenance Level?

“It’s an easy and glamorous style to maintain on a day-to-day basis, but it will require a proper cut every six weeks to maintain the shape,” explains Virginie. “The colour – Balayage 2ors combined with a ‘Diamond’ technique – has cool dominant reflects that attract light. It’s fairly simple to maintain and your colour can easily be freshened up with our exclusive Franck Provost Paris Diamond toner/treatment every four weeks.”

So here, Madame, is the new short bob: one hair cut four ways…

The Style: The Parisienne

Perfect for: A great night out. You know you want too…

Style it: “To create this style it’s ideal to use hot rollers,” explains Virginie. “My favourite brand is The O by Cloud Nine – they are the best and quickest hot rollers I’ve used so far!”

“Before styling, use a Kérastase Heat Protector Spray – the perfect styling primer for your hair. There are three Kérastase Thermique products available depending on your hair needs: Keratine Thermique, a resurfacing, restoring heat protection cream for unruly hair; Ciment Thermique, a light, restructuring heat protection cream for damaged hair; and CC Crème, a complete hair cream with three enhancing actions – to protect, repair and illuminate.

“Use it on washed and towel-dried hair to instantly smooth out split ends, frizz and roughness and seal hair cuticles together. The hair is left detangled with an easy glide, while hair breakage is reduced by 85%.

“Dry your hair with a round brush, directing the hair back off the face. Section and set in hot rollers. Once the hair has cooled, remove the rollers and gently shape the hair with your fingers.

“As a finishing product, I would use L’Oréal Professionnel Texture Dust – I call it the magic powder! It gives you hold and flexibility at the same time and it’s invisible, so you never get that caked on look or feel. Apply a small amount of dust all over your hair and use your fingers to give volume and shape to your desired look.”

The Style: Working Girl Chic

Perfect for: “This chic look is great every day hair that can stylishly take you from work to play,” says Virginie.

Style it: “For this look, you can blowdry your hair smoothed forward, or if you want a very straight look, you can also use a styling iron. My favourite is the Cloud Nine Original Iron. I love the fact that you can change the temperature setting depending on your hair and end result you want. It is less damaging as well.

“Before blowdrying, use Kérastase Crème de la Crème on towel-dried hair. This thermo-protective smoothing cream provides a powerful control of shape with anti-frizz and anti-humidity actions. Blast dry with your fingers if you want a more tousled look, or use a round brush and straightening iron for a smoother finish.

“Once styled, finish with Kérastase Laque Noire Hairspray, which provides a strong hold whilst giving the hair radiance and shine.”

The Style: The Sophisticate

Perfect for: “Special events such as weddings or occasions where you want to look and feel glamorous,” suggests Virginie.

Style it: “To achieve this result you need to do pin curls. I would recommend getting your Franck Provost stylist to do this style for you, as it is quite time consuming, however if you want to have a go at doing pin curls yourself, here’s how.

“Firstly, prep damp hair with a curl-enhancing product such as Kérastase Curl Fever Radiant Curl Refining Gel, which will help hold your curls in place. Make sure your hair isn’t too wet, as it will take too long to dry.

“Create your part line, section your hair, then starting at the top of your head, take a small one-inch piece of hair and wrap it around your finger, then remove your finger to create a small loop. Secure with a metal clip. Continue this process until all of your hair has been pinned up.

“Air-dry or gently diffuse your hair until it feels thoroughly cooled to the touch. If you like, you can wrap your hair in a silk scarf and sleep on it overnight to ensure it’s completely dry.

“Remove pins, and then break up the curls by placing your hands underneath your hair, just behind your ears, shaking it out at the root. This disrupts the curl less and allows the hair to fall much more naturally. To finish, softly sculpt your hair into the desired shape using a soft brush such as a Mason Pearson or a wide-tooth comb, which won’t stretch the curl too much. Once styled, finish with Kérastase Laque Noire hairspray to hold the style.”

The Style: The Glamazon

Perfect for: “Romantic dinners or an event,” suggests Virginie. Or knock ‘em dead at your next business proposal…

Style it: “The easiest way to achieve this look is to use the Cloud Nine Waving Wand, it’s so easy to use and gives you perfect body and waves.

“To start, apply Kérastase Sérum Jeunesse to towel dried hair. This is my Number 1 hair product. It’s a hair youth activator serum for density, volume, shine and manageability and it works on all hair types.

“Section your hair and roughly dry hair with your fingers, scrunching for texture and using a round brush to create volume at the roots. Take random sections of hair and using the Cloud Nine Waving Wand, create gentle waves all over the hair. Avoid curling too close to the root, but do try curling in different directions to get the dishevelled look. Separate the hair with your fingers to achieve the desired shape.

“Once your hair is dry, spray through Kérastase VIP Volume In Powder at the roots, which will add height and give a lovely tousled effect.

“Finish with Kérastase Laque Couture, which provides a 24-hour, anti-frizz and anti-humidity effect. It’s the perfect final touch for a superior shiny finish and to ensure flyaways are minimised.”
