5 New Spins On Engagement Rings

The engagement ring is a classic piece of jewellery, and thus doesn’t quite experience fashion ‘trends’ the way dresses and shoes do. And really, nobody wants a ring that will ‘date’.

However, according to Lauren Chang Sommer, co-founder of Moi Moi Fine Jewellery, our attitude towards the engagement ring does, however, shift over time due to a variety of factors. “Certain  gemstone shapes enjoy an interesting surge in popularity, or we witness the reawakening of a material or ring style that’s been quiescent for decades,” she says. So what are the hottest spins on the traditional engagement ring right now?

Here, Lauren shares today’s sparkling picks and the reasons why we’re coveting them …

The Asscher Cut

“When Prince William asked his school sweetheart Kate Middleton to marry him in 2010, he did so using the engagement ring that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana,” explains Lauren. “The ring was an oval-shaped sapphire surrounded by diamonds, and jewellers all over the globe – including us! – suddenly found themselves besieged with requests for sapphires.”

“Now its Kate’s sisters turn to tie the knot and we’re experiencing déjà vu as Pippa Middleton is spotted getting around with her own stunning Asscher cut diamond ring.  In fact, we have had so many requests for the Pippa Middleton ring that have her made our own version!”

“Meet the future of engagement rings – moissanite. Moissanite is a jewel with more brilliance, fire, and lustre than any jewel, including diamond. Touted the ‘most beautiful jewel in the world’, its increasing popularity is due to its environmentally sustainability and conflict-free alternative because it is not mined but created, while also being much more affordable than diamond. In fact, it’s about one tenth of the price.”

“Moissanite is re-writing tradition and disrupting the way we’re purchasing engagement rings. And with our launch of the newest generation of Moissanite – SUPERNOVA Moissanite, with the largest range of shapes and sizes of colourless Moissanite in the world – we expect popularity in Australia will continue to grow exponentially.”

“So if you’re dreaming of a designer ring but still want to have money left over to save for a home or travel, Moissanite is the way to go.”

The Emerald Cut

“Beyoncé, Amal Clooney, Eva Longoria and Mariah Carey – what do all these powerful women have in common? They all proudly sport an Emerald Cut.”

“If opulence is your thing, than you will love this stunning spin on the traditional engagement ring. The elongated shape of the cut, which varies from nearly square to a narrow, rectangle shape, creates a mirror-like effect, accentuating and elongating the hand.”

Halo Designs

“Being the most versatile design of all, the options are endless with the Halo-styled ring. The design, which features a centre stone encircled by smaller gemstones, has had a huge revival since its origins in the 1920’s, borrowing the timeless elegance of the era.”

“This style can be used for any cut such as the aforementioned asscher, but hugely popular in round, so you can absolutely customise it to your own tastes. Not only that, but the overall look of the design also gives the illusion of a larger and more striking centre stone, which is a plus if ‘go big or go home’ is your mantra!”

“If you’re after a clean, classic finish then the halo-design is the trend for you.”

“Jewellery and vintage has always been a match made in heaven, and vintage engagement rings are making a big comeback. We’ve found that modern day rings can adopt a vintage look without the effort and expense of having to restore or repair antique rings.”

“This design is characterised by its unique textures, and techniques such as engraving, filigree work, milgrain, and stone accents are just some of the ways to showcase the design’s unique charm.”

“We have seen a huge rise in demand for these rings via celebrities such as Mary Kate Olsen, who recently showed off her stunning 4 carat vintage Cartier ring at Paris Fashion Week. Her gorgeous ring was purchased at an auction- you can’t get any more vintage than that!”
