Urban industrial finishes are transforming the look and feel of homes right across Australia. From polished concrete floors to exposed wooden and steel beams, urban industrial is the new cool. But of course not everyone can rip out the walls, ceilings and floors to get the look. The solution? Show stopping sculptural and functional pieces for your outdoor spaces.

Headed up by husband and wife design duo Chris Vassallo and Timothea Jewell, the award-winning team are considered industry leaders in designer laser-cut and hand-cut decorative screens, light features, planters, sculptures and fire pits. Their materials of choice? Corten steel, aluminium, plexiglass, copper, brass and stainless steel.

And it has been commissioned by high flyers including Westfield, The City of Melbourne and Deakin University.
Here, they Creative Director, Timothea Jewell, shares five easy ways to use urban industrial designs to your outdoor spaces…
Warm up the look and feel of your outdoor spaces with a toasty warm fire pit. “The Lump Fire Pits have rustic charm and are designed using Corten steel – so they emit lots of heat safely for a small backyard bonfire,” explains Timothea. “They are perfect for enjoying the outdoors during the chilly months.”
Keep the neighbours out and your backyard guests mesmerised with striking decorative screens. “At Lump, we specialise in decorative screens to perform an array of functions, from privacy screening for the garden to decorative screens as a feature item,” explains Timothea. “Our metal screens are laser cut in either Corten steel, stainless steel or aluminium and finished in a variety of powder coat colours or one of our custom finishes. These decorative screens can form feature walls or facades that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.”
“Our range of standard designs can also be customised into a variety scales to suit façade or residential feature screens, fences or gates and even as accessories in the landscape.”
“Many Australian designers and homeowners have commissioned Lump to supply cladding and feature products into their beautiful projects, both commercial and residential in size.”
Show your artistic flair with contemporary sculptures guaranteed to be a conversation starter. “Metal sculptures by Lump are made to order in corten steel, stainless steel or aluminium, and finished in a variety of rusty and custom paint finishes,” explains Timothea. “At Lump, our focus is local craftsmanship and quality. Our specialty is sculptural features for the landscape. Our contemporary range of locally made objects can also be customised into a variety of scales, with a body of work that stretches the reaches from the public domain to the private urban courtyard. We have collaborated with many Australian designers and homeowners who have commissioned Lump to create features in their beautiful projects, both commercial and residential in size.”
“The sculptural Shard Planters are incredible and reminiscent of volcanic shards rising from the depths of the earth,” says Timothea. Made from Corten steel with a natural rusted finish, Timothea says the versatile planters can stand tall or be mounted on the side.
“The Shard Planters are the focal point of any outdoor space to be used as planters for cascading shrubs, and the larger Shard designs are able to provide a beautiful frame for trees.”
Timothea adds that the ‘I’ beams with timber inset (image right), is also becoming a popular feature in the landscape. “It provides the illusion of a larger space and structure to host outdoor heaters, lighting and hanging plants.”
Turn your walls into a work of art with show stopping lighting. “At Lump, we specialise in decorative, laser cut light features that accentuate outdoor spaces after dark, providing a gently illuminated garden focal point,” explains Timothea.
“Both our outdoor decorative pendants and light box products are manufactured in Corten steel, stainless steel or aluminium, and finished in a variety of rusty and custom finishes. These decorative products can form feature walls or facades that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.”
